New Blog: Finding Recovery through Millati Islami

By Editor SHARE! on

Recovery is deeply personal. Each person takes a path that works best for them. Some turn to 12-step programs. Others find support from friends or talk therapy, while others turn to religion. One religious recovery program is Millati Islami (The Path of Peace).

Zaid Imani, the founder of Millati Islami, was seeking a way to incorporate Islam with the traditional Twelve Step approach for people struggling with drugs or alcohol. His Du’a (prayer) was for Allah to guide his way to recovery while staying rooted in the Islamic way of life.

Millati Islami is a Muslim 12-step program made up of a fellowship of men and women, joined together on the “Path of Peace”. They share their experience, strength, and hope while recovering from active addiction. Millati Islami states: “We pray further that it will serve as a model for successfully understanding and addressing the special problems encountered as recovering Muslims and substance abusers in a predominately non-Muslim society.”

Millati Islami conveys that in the teachings of Allah are man is “Khalifa” (agent or inheritor of the earth) entrusted with the custodianship of His creation. Muslims believe that our own bodies, minds, and souls belong to Allah, and are only entrusted to us for a time. Muslims are charged with the care of their bodies, minds and souls—and should not be slaves to mind and mood-altering chemicals.

Millati Islami was created in 1989 and was local to Baltimore, Maryland until Zaid met Bilal Ali. Bilal Ali was a facilitator of Jama’at Al Tauba, in Washington, D.C. another recovery group for Muslims. Soon after their meeting, it was announced that the groups would merge and become the program it is today. With the growth and need for this type of support, there are now Millati Islami chapters and meetings around the world.
